Type 1 & 2 Diabetes

Diabetes can cause significant damage to the nerves in the feet and legs. Hence patients are often unable to feel what is happening and can be unaware of any issues arising, especially if reaching their feet is difficult, making a thorough inspection impossible.

Symptoms to look out for:

  • Numbness or reduced ability to feel pain or temperature changes
  • Tingling or burning sensation
  • Sharp pains or cramps
  • Increased sensitivity to touch
  • Loss of balance

My advice to diabetic patients is to see a Podiatrist on a regular basis. However, they can help maintain their own feet by using daily footcream, such as Ureka. I also recommend my patients to file their nails rather than cutting!
